HC Deb 19 October 1988 vol 138 cc910-3W
Mr. Pike

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will list those local authorities in whose area a population decline of 5 per cent, or over was noted between the census of 1961 and 1981; and what information he has with regard to population decline since the last official census.

Mrs. Currie

The information requested is given in the tables. Table 1 lists local authorities in England and Wales whose resident populations declined by 5 per cent, or more between 1961 and 1981. Table 2 contains a list of authorities not included on table 1 whose populations have fallen by 5 per cent, or more between 1981 and 1987 (the last year for which estimates are available).

1961 populations: The Registrar General's Revised Estimates of the Population 1961–1971; 1981 & 1987 populations: OPCS Monitor PPI 88/1.

Population estimates for 1961 and 1981 are based upon the Censuses held in those years. A number of adjustments have been made to Census results so that the figures relate to usually resident populations at mid year. Mid 1987 estimates have been obtained by updating census-based 1981 figures to take account of subsequent births, deaths and migration. No adjustments have been made to remove any effects of changes in boundaries since the local government reorganisation of 1974.
