HC Deb 19 October 1988 vol 138 c913W
Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) what reports on the health implications of sugar consumption have been received by his Department in the past five years;

(2) when he expects to receive the report on sugar from the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

In recent years two scientific reports on sugar and health have been received in the Department:

  1. 1. "The Evaluation of Health Aspects of Sugars" from the United States Food and Drug Administration (1986),
  2. 2. "Report on Sugars and Syrups" from the British Nutrition Foundation (1987).

In addition, the Chief Medical Officer's Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy (COMA) panel on sugars in the diet has received some 20 submissions from interested individuals and organisations. We expect the panel's report in the course of next year.
