§ Mr. Wilson
To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Cunninghame, North on 9 November, he will estimate the cost of establishing the number of YTS applicants without places in each region on a fixed date.

§ Mr. Cope
Only the local careers services will know the number who have applied for a YTS place at any one time. In order to establish a national figure, each careers office would have to be contacted to gather the information and to ensure that they were counting in the same way and on the same day. Figures would then have to be checked back with the local offices and inquiries followed up. The information could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.

Member 605W for Cunninghame, North on 9 November, he will define the steps taken to fulfil the guarantee on YTS places for all 16 and 17-year-olds, in the absence of information about how many of them there are without such places, on any given date.

Joint planning takes place at local level between the careers service and the relevant Training Agency area office to estimate the flow of applicants and range of occupational interests, and to provide a corresponding flow of places, with an overprovision of places so as to allow choice.
