HC Deb 27 May 1988 vol 134 cc411-2W
Mr. McLeish

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he has received the response of the tobacco industry to the 1986 voluntary agreement on tobacco products' advertising and promotion, and health warnings; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

The agreement commenced on 1 April 1986 and is due to run until 31 October 1989. There is no reason for the industry to respond to the agreement over and above their compliance with the terms. The working of the agreement is overseen by the committee for monitoring agreements on tobacco advertising and sponsorship whose first report was published on 23 March. Copies are available in the Library. The Government have indicated their intention to seek the renegotiation of the agreement to reflect current needs.
