To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how many additional nursing homes in the private sector have been opened in the past five years; and how many beds this represents.

The number of private hospital homes and clinics registered in England has risen by 1,052 from 1,214 in 1982 to 2,266 in 1986, the latest date for which information is held centrally. Over the same period, the total available bed stock rose from 34,786 to 62,112, an increase of 27,326.
