HC Deb 17 March 1988 vol 129 cc678-9W
Ms. Ruddock

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the nurse-patient ratio in the Lewisham and North Southwark district health authority for each of the last 10 years.

Mrs. Currie

Information on nursing and midwifery staff and hospital activity levels in Lewisham and North Southwark health authority from 1982 to 1986 is provided in the tables. Prior to 1 April 1982 the authority's predecessor health districts formed part of the Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham area health authority and district-based figures were not collected centrally. The nursing and midwifery staff figures cover a wide range of Health Service activity, not just those related to hospital activity, and calculation of a nurse-patient ratio would be simplistic and might be misleading.

Notes:
1 Includes agency staff.
2 All figures are independently rounded to the nearest 10 whole-time equivalents.
3 Merging of two pay-roll systems, used to calculate staffing figures, likely to have caused some double-counting.
