To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the percentage change in (i) National Health Service funding in real terms and in cash terms and (ii) employment of medical staff from 1978 to 1988 in the South East Thames regional health authority.

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list(a) the number of private beds and (b) the total income from private beds in National Health Service hospitals in 1986–87 for the South East Thames regional health authority.

There were 341 authorised pay beds within the South East Thames region at 31 December 1986. The 1986–87 annual accounts of health authorities in the region show that total income from private patients, under section 65 of the National Health Service Act 1977, was £5,732, 413.
