§ Mr. Peter BottomleyAll county, borough and district councils in England and Wales are being sent a local transport note—"Getting the Right Balance—Guidance on Vehicle Restriction on Pedestrian Zones". This will also be sent to national and other organisations who responded to our earlier consultation on the subject.
The guidance to local authorities and others stresses the need for a careful balance to be drawn where ideas are being considered for pedestrian zones. Traffic restriction measures can increase safety and convenience for many pedestrians, and improve the attractiveness of a street or 621W area. The importance of providing access for essential vehicle movements, including servicing and for mobility handicapped people is emphasised strongly.
