HC Deb 16 March 1988 vol 129 c620W
Mr. Roger King

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he has received any representations about the difficulty that motor cyclists with prescription-lensed goggles have in complying with the eye protector regulations.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Yes. I understand that prescription-lensed goggles meeting the British Standard in full are not yet available. Since existing prescription-lensed goggles will generally be of good quality, we propose to amend the regulations to allow the continued use of existing goggles of this special type and to postpone the requirement for new ones to be BS approved and marked, for a further year. The Department is circulating for comment appropriate draft amendments to the regulations. The amendments also permit the use of glass-lensed goggles approved to an earlier version of the standard which did not require marking with the letter A to show abrasion resistance.
