HC Deb 16 March 1988 vol 129 cc621-2W
Mr. David Shaw

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has on the estimated cost, first year rate of return and net present value for the dualling of the current roads(a) between Lydden and Whitfield (A256), (b) Whitfield to Deal road (A258) and (c) Deal road to Eastern docks in Dover; and if he has any further information on those road projects.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The following provisional estimates for dualling the A2 between junctions were prepared in 1985:

£ million—1979 prices
Cost Net present value1
Lydden to Whitfield (A256) 5.1 -1.0 to -0.7
Whitfield to Deal Road (A258) 3.2 -0.7 to -0.5

1 Discounted to 1979.

We have no proposals to improve the A2 between Lydden and Dover. We shall keep the position under review. The A2 and the improved A20 routes, taken together, should be able to cope with predicted traffic beyond the turn of the century.
