HC Deb 16 March 1988 vol 129 c576W
Ms. Ruddock

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what information he has regarding the arrest of 14 British citizens in Brussels during a demonstration outside the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation headquarters on 2 March; and if he will make representations to his counterpart in Belgium regarding the conditions of their detention.

Mr. Eggar

A group of British citizens were taken into custody by the Brussels town police on 2 March 1988 and held for between eight and 10 hours. They were detained under normal police procedures for reasons of security and public order.

We have no evidence to suggest that their conditions of detention were different from those which a Belgian citizen could expect if detained in similar circumstances.
