To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the progress made in organising the European Economic Community free food scheme in the United Kingdom.

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the latest position in the United Kingdom for the European Economic Community's free food scheme.

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a further statement on Her Majesty's Government's policy towards British participation in the EEC's scheme to provide free food for the needy from EEC intervention stocks.

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the progress of the operation of the European Commission free food scheme in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Gummer

The period for receipt of application from organisations wishing to distribute under the arrangements ended on 29 February. The Government are examining these applications to establish what amounts the Commission should be asked to authorise for distribution in the United Kingdom. I shall make a further announcement in due course.

74. Mr. Sean Hughes

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what discussions he is having with organisations eligible to operate the European Community free food scheme.

Mr. Gummer

Officials of my Department last met charitable organisations on 12 February, and we are in contact also with the local authority representative bodies.
