To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many exstra prison officer posts will be created during the financial years 1988–89 and 1989–90 in England and Wales.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

1,360 additional prison officers will be recruited in 1988–89. Decisions for 1989–90 have not yet been made.
