HC Deb 01 March 1988 vol 128 c496W
Mr. John Marshall

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people have been convicted of murder since 1965; how many of these have been subsequently released from prison; and how many of these have been subsequently charged with another crime.

Mr. John Patten

[holding answer 25 February 1988]: The number of persons convicted of murder is published annually in table S2.1(A) of "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales, Supplementary Tables Vol. 2"; the figures for 1965–86 are given in the following table. The corresponding figure for 1987 is not yet available. The readily available information on those re-convicted after release on licence relates to all offences of homicide, most of which are murder, and is published in tables 2 and 6 of Home Office statistical bulletin, issue 18/87 "Reconvictions and Recalls of Life Licensees". Copies of both publications are in the Library.
