To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether any compensation is envisaged to the people of Newbury for the permanent loss of common land at Royal Air Force Greenham Common as a public recreational area in the event of compulsory extinction of commoners' rights.

Mr. Freeman

Compensation will be payable to those whose rights of common are being legally extinguished at RAF Greenham Common. The general public have no right of access to the land concerned, the freehold of which is held by the Secretary of State for Defence.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what repair work to fences and structures on common land at Royal Air Force Greenham Common is currently being undertaken.

I refer the hon. Member to the answer given by my hon. Friend the Minister of State for the Armed Forces on 13 July 1988 at column238. In accordance with normal procedures, maintenance and repair work to the fences and structures at Royal Air Force Greenham Common is undertaken as and when necessary.
