HC Deb 27 July 1988 vol 138 c364W
Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how many cases of listeriosis were notified in 1987; in how many of these deaths occurred; and if he will list the number of cases of listeriosis notified to the Government for the previous three years.

Mrs. Currie

Listeriosis is not a notifiable disease under either the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984 or the Public Health (Infectious Diseases) Regulations 1968.

In 1987, there were 17 deaths at ages 28 days and over registered in England and Wales where the underlying cause of death was assigned as listeriosis (international classification of diseases ICD 9th revision 027.0). There were a further three deaths occurring in the neonatal period (first 28 days of life) where congenital listeriosis (ICD (9) 771.2 (part)) was mentioned on the death certificate.
