HL Deb 13 July 1988 vol 499 c922WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

When outboard motor boats were first permitted on the Serpentine in Hyde Park and whether the permission is permanent.

The Earl of Caithness

Motor boats were first permitted on the Serpentine in 1972 following a drowning accident. Four boats are currently in use. Two arc provided solely for safety purposes to assist swimmers or boaters who get into difficulties. Two are used for pleasure trips but can also he used for safety purposes when needed. All the boats are operated by trained staff. The provision of two safety boats is a requirement of the contract for the swimming and boating concessions at the Serpentine. The pleasure boats cause little distrubance and we are satisfied that permission to operate them should continue.
