Number of premises subject to the Radioactive Substances Act 1960

1987: approximately 6,500 sewage treatment works1 of which 4,600 have numerical consents and are therefore subject to compliance testing. The remainder are small works serving less than 250 people which have descriptive consents. Although not subjects to compliance testing, they are subject to inspection.

1 HMIP is also responsible for issuing consents on behalf of the Secretaries of State for discharges for storm overflows, coastal outfalls and some water treatment works the total for which is not available.

Number of controlled waste sites under the Control of Pollution Act 1974

1987: 5,100

The figures for 1987 are the latest available. Comparable figures for 1986 are not available.
