§ Mr. MoynihanHer Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution advises both my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for the Environment and for Wales, and in that capacity is responsible for inspecting and or monitoring the following:
Number of premises subject to the Radioactive Substances Act 1960
1987:5,799
Number of works registered under the Alkali etc. Works Regulation Act 1906 and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974

Number of works subject to discharge consent under the Control of Pollution Act 1974
1987: approximately 6,500 sewage treatment works1 of which 4,600 have numerical consents and are therefore subject to compliance testing. The remainder are small works serving less than 250 people which have descriptive consents. Although not subjects to compliance testing, they are subject to inspection.
398W1 HMIP is also responsible for issuing consents on behalf of the Secretaries of State for discharges for storm overflows, coastal outfalls and some water treatment works the total for which is not available.
