HC Deb 04 July 1988 vol 136 c397W
Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what action he proposes to take to advise intending holidaymakers that the water off the beaches of Sandwich, Deal, Folkestone, Sandgate, Hythe, Dymchurch and St. Mary's Bay failed the EEC coliform bacterial test in both 1986 and 1987.

Mr. Moynihan

These bathing waters were among those included in the 1987 monitoring survey, the results of which I announced on 5 May in reply to a question by my hon. Friend the Member for Wolverhampton, North-East (Mr. Hicks) at columns571–77. We are committed to bringing all identified waters up to EC standards. In general, no specific advice is necessary to holidaymakers in respect of waters which currently fail to meet standards. If, because of exceptional local circumstances, it were necessary to advise the public in respect of any water, it would be for the water authority and the local environmental health officer to take the appropriate action.
