HC Deb 18 January 1988 vol 125 cc586-90W
Mr. Meacher

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what has been the reduction or increase in the number of beds in each district health authority each year since 1979, including whatever data are available for 1987.

Mrs. Currie

[holding answer 9 December 1987]: The available information for the years 1979 to 1981 is given in the table. For the later years requested I refer the hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Member for Holborn and St. Pancras (Mr. Dobson) on 8 December 1987 at column 138. Data for 1987 are not yet available. For England as a whole the number of available beds decreased by 12.7 per cent. between 1979 and 1986, whilst the number of inpatient cases treated rose by 18.8 per cent.
