HC Deb 18 January 1988 vol 125 cc590-3W
Mr. Wareing

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what estimate he has of how much unpaid overtime working is undertaken by nurses; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Newton

[holding answer 16 December 1987]: It is not possible to estimate how much, if any, unpaid overtime is undertaken by nurses as information on overtime worked is only collected for pay roll purposes. Excess hours payments are normally made to all nursing staff up to and including the pay grade of senior nurse 7 who are required by their employing authority to work in excess of 371/2 hours a week when extra off-duty time cannot be granted.

Ms. Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) if he will(a) list the number of staff in whole-time equivalents in each main category of staff for whom general practitioners are entitled to claim reimbursement for part of their salaries under the ancillary staff scheme, (b) give the average cost per whole-time equivalent of the reimbursement to unrestricted principals in general practice for each category of staff and (c) give a breakdown of these figures for each family practitioner committee;

(2) if he will give the total, and a breakdown for each family practitioner committee, of the number of unrestricted principals in general practice in England and Wales as at 1 October 1986.

Mr. Newton

[holding answer 18 December 1987]: Information is not available centrally on the cost of separate categories of staff. Otherwise the information for England and Wales at 1 October 1986 is as follows:
