To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans Nirex has to create nuclear waste disposal dumps in Lancashire and Cumbria, other than Sellafield; and if he will make a statement.

My right hon. Friend expects UK Nirex Ltd to make proposals early in 1989 for a deep dual-purpose disposal facility for two-level and intermediate-level radioactive waste, after evaluation of the response to the discussion document "The Way Forward" and scientific studies. At this stage neither Nirex nor the Government has any firm proposals for the siting of a radioactive waste repository and no part of the country can be ruled out.
