§ Mr. PawseyTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many vehicles are using the southern end of the M1 from Luton to junction 1, and what is the design capability of the relevant sections of the motorway.
152Wnorth and south-bound carriageways of the M1 between Luton and junction 1, broken down by type of vehicle and month of occurrence.
§ Mr. Peter BottomleyThe total number of recorded accidents during the years 1985 to 1987 was 290 northbound and 278 southbound. Full details are in the following table:
§ Mr. Peter BottomleyThe current annual average daily flow of traffic on the M1 between the various junctions is as follows: 153W
Lanes Vehicles per day (two way) Junctions 1–2 D3 42,000 2–4 D3 66,000 4–5 D3 77,000 5–6 D3 69,000 6A-7 N4-S3 127,000 7–8 D4 143,000 8–9 D3 117,000 9–10 (Luton) D3 105,000 Departmental standards used in the assessment and design of roads give an upper design threshold for a new dual three-lane motorway of 79,000 vehicles per (annual average) day. There is no upper design threshold for dual four-lane motorways. The design flow for any road is less than its maximum capacity and many sections of existing motorway are currently carrying more traffic than the upper design threshold.
