HC Deb 23 February 1988 vol 128 cc133-4W
Mr. Kirkwood

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list in theOfficial Report his Department's staff targets for the Scottish hospital and community health services for each year from 1979 up to the latest year for which figures are available.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

The Scottish Home and Health Department does not set annual targets as such. In medical services the establishment of senior registrars is determined annually. Targets are being negotiated with health boards for the numbers of recruits to nursing training and annual discussions take place with health boards about requirements for staff in certain professions allied to medicine. health boards are being encouraged to develop manpower planning in the context of the Department's monitoring of progress towards the priorities set out in "Scottish Health Authorities Priorities for the Eighties"—the SHAPE report.

Mr. Kirkwood
