To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people are over(a) 65 years, (b) 75 years and (c) 85 years in each region in Scotland.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) how many places there are in local authority residential care for the elderly for each region; and what has been the percentage change since 1979;

(2) how many places there are in private residential care homes for the elderly; and what has been the percentage change since 1979;

(3) how many places there are in homes for the elderly owned or operated by churches, charities, housing associations or other voluntary organisations; and what has been the percentage change since 1979.

Provisional figures are available separately for places in voluntary and private homes for the elderly in 1987, but for 1979 a single total only is available. There were 2,306 places in private homes and 4,441 places in voluntary homes in 1987 an increase of 30.1 per cent. over the 1979 total. The information requested on places in local authority homes for the elderly is as follows:
