HC Deb 22 February 1988 vol 128 cc72-3W
40. Mr. Amess

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what representations he has received about the road safety implications of the use of telephones in cars.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

We have received a number of representations. Most expressed concern at the safety implications of using in-car telephones in moving vehicles. The revised highway code, issued in March 1987, tells drivers not to use a hand-held telephone while their vehicle is moving, except in an emergency. Anyone who can afford a car telephone can afford, and should use, a hands-free microphone.
