HC Deb 17 February 1988 vol 127 c620W
Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what measures he is currently considering for the improved protection of prisoners from infection with the HIV virus.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

High priority continues to be given to preventive measures, which currently include systematic medical inquiry and examination at the reception stage, counselling of individual prisoners, precautionary regime restrictions at the discretion of the medical officer for prisoners identified as HIV antibody positive, and a strong emphasis on educational initiatives directed to all prisoners. A purpose-designed video film for prisoners is being developed. All aspects of the prevention strategy are kept under review.
