To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what ancillary services to the Metropolitan police have been privatised since 1979.

I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that the following services have been contracted out in whole or in part since 1979, although a few may have been contracted out to some extent before then:

  • vehicle servicing and repairs
  • boat and aircraft repairs
  • radio repairs
  • vehicle wheelclamping
  • design and organisation of building works
  • design and installation of electrical, mechanical and public health services in buildings
  • maintenance, alterations and improvements to buildings quantity surveying
  • cleaning of buildings
  • laundering
  • security of buildings
  • computer services
  • publishing and bookbinding
  • recovery of vehicles

From 15 February 1988, the removal of storage of illegally parked vehicles in three areas of London will also be contracted out.
