HC Deb 10 February 1988 vol 127 cc215-6W
Mr. Hoyle

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the period of detention at Risley remand centre of the six Iranians and one Iraqi who entered the United Kingdom at Liverpool without authorisation in December 1987; to which nation these people were deported; whether any of them had any form of medical examination while they were at Risley remand centre; what was the nature of the suicide attempts that they made on 4 January; and whether any other suicide attempts were made by these men while they were at Risley remand centre.

Mr. Renton

These stowaways were detained at Risley remand centre from 22 December 1987 to 15 January 1988 following refusal of entry. All of them were medically examined there and held in the hospital wing. On 4 January, two of the men scratched themselves on the stomach and chest with a plastic knife causing superficial injuries. No other attempts to injure themselves were made. The men flew to Greece on 15 January under arrangements made by the immigration service and agreed with the men and the Greek authorities.
