HC Deb 10 February 1988 vol 127 c216W
Mr. Campbell-Savours

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the purpose of the meeting at the Royal hotel, Scarborough, in May 1986 which was attended by Sir Lawrence Byford, Chief Inspector of Constabulary, Mr. Phillip Myers, Inspector of Constabulary for the North West and Northern Ireland, Mr. Colin Sampson, chief constable of West Yorkshire, and Mr. James Anderton, chief constable of Greater Manchester; and for what purpose Sir John Hermon, Chief Constable of the Royal Ulster Constabulary visited this hotel whilst the meeting was taking place.

Mr. Hurd

The meeting was arranged by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary to discuss allegations about the conduct of the then deputy chief constable of Greater Manchester which had been brought to the attention of Mr. Anderton.

The meeting took place on 19 May 1986. I understand that Sir John Hermon was in Northern Ireland throughout that day and that he had no prior knowledge of the meeting.
