§ Mr. CryerTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what information his Department currently possesses on the inquiries to be undertaken, respectively, by(a) the Euratom safeguards directorate and (b) the commission of inquiry of the European Parliament appointed on 20 January to investigate the adequacy of the implementations of nuclear safeguards to nuclear facilities within the EEC member states.
§ Mr. MellorI assume that the hon. Member is referring to the allegations involving a German firm, Transnuklear, and the Belgian nuclear centre at Mol. Following those allegations, Euratom officials, working with officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency, carried out exhaustive checks and found no evidence that any nuclear material of significance has been diverted and no evidence of any breach of safeguards.
The European Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry which was appointed on 20 January to investigate activities at Mol is to report within four months from that date.
