There are a number of factors which may contribute to variations in costs between one hospital and another. They include variations in the proportion of patients treated in different specialties, the difference in cost of treating certain types of case, in-patient length of stay and numbers and grades of staff employed. 1986–87 cost information by region and for England as a whole is not yet available.
