Mr. Ronnie Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will give, for 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987, the total number of unemployment benefit claimants allowed to sign quarterly; and if he will give the totals on a similar basis for each unemployment benefit office in Blyth and Cramlington.

Mr. Lee

The numbers of unemployed claimants in Great Britain included in the monthly unemployment count who were allowed to sign quarterly in December 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987 were 261,466, 291,788, 294,169 and 261,189 respectively. The comparable figures for the Blyth and Cramlington unemployment benefit offices at 10 December 1987 were 418 and 200 respectively.
