HC Deb 27 April 1988 vol 132 cc187-8W
25. Mr. McKelvey

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he has yet made arrangements for setting up a breast cancer screening unit in Ayrshire; and if he will outline arrangements made for Ayrshire women in the interim.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

The introduction of a national breast cancer screening service in Scotland for all women aged between 50 and 64 will be a phased programme. The first four centres, in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee, will come into operation during the course of this year and we aim to have the remaining centres in operation by 1991. We shall consult individual health boards about the location and commissioning of the remaining centres required to provide a national screening service. The current diagnostic facilities for breast examination will continue to be available in the normal way for women in Ayrshire and elsewhere.
