HC Deb 26 October 1987 vol 121 cc48-9W
Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the recent ministerial visit to India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh; and what practical assistance Her Majesty's Government plan to give to India in dealing with the problems arising from the conflict in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Eggar

The Minister of State, Home Office, my hon. Friend the Member for Mid Sussex (Mr. Renton), visited India. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan from 3 to 17 September to examine the entry clearance systems operated by British missions in those countries.

We continue to give full support to the agreement signed on 29 July between India and Sri Lanka designed to bring an end to the tragic conflict in Sri Lanka.

We have made available £1.5 million for emergency relief and rehabilitation aid in Sri Lanka, and are in consultation with other aid donors with a view to playing a part in further rehabilitation work.
