HC Deb 26 October 1987 vol 121 c48W
Mr. Wray

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he has any plans to seek to make the United Kingdom a party to the Franco-German military agreement; what agreement he has made of the implications of the agreement for (a) the United Kingdom defence policy and (b) the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellor

The establishment of a Franco-German defence council, recently announced by President Mitterrand, is an extension of the military co-operation provisions of the Elyseé treaty signed between them in 1963. There are no plans for the United Kingdom to become a party to this treaty. We welcome Franco-German co-operation in the defence field in so far as it contributes to the effectiveness of NATO as a whole.
