HC Deb 26 October 1987 vol 121 c48W
Mr. Wray

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what estimate he has made of the effects of an economic embargo on Iran on the peace process in the Gulf.

Mr. Mellor

No proposals for an economic embargo of Iran are current, and hence no detailed study of its effects on the prospects for peace has been undertaken. The only embargo which has been proposed in the context of enforcing Security Council resolution 598 is an arms embargo. We have made clear our willingness to see such an embargo against non-complying parties. Our position on more general economic sanctions is well known and we would be extremely sceptical of any such proposal were it to be made.
