HC Deb 21 October 1987 vol 120 cc773-5W
Mr. Wheeler

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will publish up-to-date figures indicating the number of unpaid parking fines incurred by each diplomatic mission in the first six months of 1987; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Eggar

The information requested by my hon. Friend is given in the table. The table also includes those international organisations which have incurred unpaid fines. The figures may be reduces by late payment.

The total for the first six months of 1987 indicates a 20 per cent. reduction over the same period of 1986. I have written personally to the heads of the 10 missions with the most unpaid fines during the period in question. They are France, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Egypt, Iraq, Quatar, United Arab Emirates, Soviet Union, Spain and Pakistan. These missions account for 38 per cent. of the total.

We welcome the further significant reduction in unpaid parking fines that has been achieved this year. We are looking for further reductions and hope for early results from the action I have taken with the top 10 offending missions

Parking fixed penalty notices cancelled on the grounds of diplomatic immunity (metropolitan police district)
