HC Deb 21 October 1987 vol 120 cc761-2W
Mr. Beggs

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will introduce legislation to require those pursuing, or proposing to pursue, insurance claims by legal action in Northern Ireland to contribute towards their legal costs in cases where out-of-court settlements are reached in their favour; and if he will make a statement.

3. Some jury trials are included in cases where the Attorney General certified out of the scheduled mode of trial, ie non-terrorist serious offences.

4. Where a person had been convicted of more than one offence only the most serious or that which received the longest sentence is recorded in the statistics.

Mr. Stanley

There are no plans to interfere with the principle that where actions are settled out of court the terms of the settlement, including the question of costs, are a matter for agreement between the plaintiff and defendant to the action.
