asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many nurses were employed by the West Surrey/North East Hampshire district authority in (a) 1979, (b) 1983 and the latest date for which information is available.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many nurses have left the National Health Service in the Wessex region for the last three available years.

Mr. Newton

Information on numbers of nurses leaving the National Health Service is not collected centrally. However, the table of staff in post at 30 September for each of the last three available years, shows that there has been a net increase in nursing and midwifery staff employed in the Wessex Regional Health Authority over this period.
