HC Deb 09 March 1987 vol 112 cc68-9W
Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what indicators are available to demonstrate changes in activity of the South-West Surrey and West Surrey/North East Hampshire district health authorities in 1979, 1983 and the latest date for which information is available; and what was the total expenditure on each of these dates.

Mr. Newton

The Department now issues a package of performance indicators (PIs) annually to all health authorities. These indicators bring together data from a number of established sources and provide managers with a means of comparing the performance of their own services with those in other authorities. The current set of PIs examines the whole spectrum of activity in the NHS and has been issued for three years, 1983–84, 1984–85 and 1985–86. This set extended the coverage of the original package for 1981–82 issued in 1983. No indicators are available for years before 1981–82. Copies of the PI packages issued to the health service are held in the statistics section of the Library.

Current expenditure for the financial years 1983–84 and 1985–86, derived from the accounts of the health authorities for the respective years is as follows:

1983–84 1985–86
South West Surrey 30,586,388 33,733,031
West Surrey/North East Hampshire 32,974,217 37,911,701

Figures for districts were not collected centrally prior to NHS Restructuring on 1 April 1982.
