HC Deb 24 July 1987 vol 120 cc667-9W
Mr. Nicholas Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list the percentage unemployment in each parliamentary constituency at 11 June.

Mr. Lee

My Department calculates unemployment rates for self-contained labour market areas only; the smallest such areas are travel-to-work areas.

Sir Barney Hayhoe

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what change has taken place since August 1985 in the unemployment figures for the Brentford and Isleworth constituency; and when was the last time that the figures were at the present level.

Mr. Lee

The following information is in the Library. On 8 August 1985, the number of unemployed claimants in the Brentford and Isleworth constituency was 4,349. On 11 June 1987, the number was 3,524, which was the lowest total since unemployment figures for parliamentary constituencies were introduced in June 1983. The comparison is affected by minor changes in the coverage of the data.

Mr. Battle

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people in Leeds, West have been employed in (a) service industries and (b) manufacturing industries for each of the last four years.

Mr. Lee

The latest available estimates for the Leeds, West constituency, from the census of employment, indicate that at September 1984 there were 13,300 employees in employment in service industries and 7,900 in manufacturing industries. An industry breakdown for parliamentary constituencies from the previous 1981 census of employment was not produced.

Mr. Battle

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the total number of job vacancies in Leeds, West for the latest date available.

Mr. Lee

The following information is in the library. Vacancy statistics are not available by parliamentary constituency as such. However, the Leeds, West constituency corresponds to most of the Bramley jobcentre area and part of the Leeds jobcentre area, and at these jobcentres there were 213 and 1,710 unfilled vacancies, respectively, on 6 June 1987. Vacancies at jobcentres do not represent the total number of vacancies in the economy. Estimates suggest that nationally about a third of all vacancies are notified to jobcentres, but equivalent local estimates are not available.

Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is his estimate of the numbers of persons employed by (a) banks, (b) building societies, (c) estate agents and (d) lawyers; and if he has comparable information on the Federal Republic of West Germany.

Mr. Lee

The Department's employment statistics are classified according to the 1980 standard industrial classification, which does not separately identify building societies. The latest available estimates of the numbers of employees in employment in banking and bill-discounting and house and estate agents are for March 1987. Quarterly estimates of employees in employment in legal services are not made; the latest available is from the September 1984 census of employment.

The available information for Great Britain is as follows.

Employees in Employment: Great Britain
Numbers
AH 81401 Banking and bill-discounting 2407,000
AH 83401 House and estate agents 2102,000
AH 83501 Legal services 3141,000

1 Activity Heading of the 1980 Standard Industrial Classification.

3 September 1984.

The latest readily available figures for the Federal Republic of Germany are less detailed and show that in 1984 1,593,000 employees (7 per cent. of all employees) in the Federal Republic worked in banking and finance, business services and renting. Banking and finance accounted for 37 per cent. of this total.
