asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list the day miles of motorway lane closures in each of the last 15 years; and if he will express the lane closures as percentages of the total motorway mileage for each year.

This information is not available. The length of lane closure varies from day to day and hour to hour. It is impracticable to keep a comprehensive record of the changing pattern.

We expect work on about 5 per cent. of the network each year. Before the past six years, work was done on about 3 per cent. Within the next four years, we expect to eliminate the backlog.
