HC Deb 10 February 1987 vol 110 c155W
Mr. Sheerman

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement on the traffic club currently in operation in the Greater London area and its future funding.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The traffic club operating in Greater London is a part of the research and intelligence unit, which is run by the London Residuary Body as an agency service on behalf of the London boroughs. I understand that the future of the unit is currently the subject of discussion by the boroughs.

Mr. Sheerman

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what assessment he has made of the contribution which the extension of national traffic clubs could make in regard to safety of young children.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Limited experience of traffic clubs in this country makes it impossible to assess what effect a national traffic club might have on child safety on the roads. There are some indications that in Scandinavia, where traffic clubs have been operating for longer, they have contributed with other factors to reductions in child pedestrian casualties.
