HC Deb 02 February 1987 vol 109 c547W
Mr. MacKenzie

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much was spent on research into cures for tobacco addiction in the last calendar year for which figures are available.

Mrs. Currie

The Department is currently providing £70,000 per year for the purpose of running and monitoring the effectiveness of facilities at the Bethlem Royal hospital and the Maudsley hospital, London.

The main Government funded agency for carrying out biomedical research in the United Kingdom is the Medical Research Council, which receives its grant-in-aid from the Department of Education and Science. I understand that the council is funding research on additions including smoking.

Information on other research into cures for tobacco addiction is not held centrally.

Mr. MacKenzie

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much was spent in the last calendar year for which figures are available on curing people addicted to tobacco smoking; and if he will give a breakdown of the figure.

Mrs. Currie

This information is not collected centrally.
