HC Deb 02 February 1987 vol 109 cc547-8W
Mr. MacKenzie

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much was spent in the last calendar year for which figures are available on curing people addicted to drug taking; and if he will give a breakdown of that figure.

Mrs. Currie

£5 million has been made available to health authorities in England in the financial year 1986–87 specifically for the development of services for drug misusers. Grants totalling a further £5.2 million have been made to individual local projects. Information on amounts spent on services for drug misusers by health and local authorities from their normal allocations is not held centrally.

Mr. MacKenzie

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many deaths were recorded as due to drug taking in the last calendar year for which figures are available.

Mrs. Currie

The table shows the number of deaths registered in England and Wales in 1985, the latest available calendar year, where the underlying cause of death was stated as drug dependence or non-dependent abuse of drugs, excluding alcohol and tobacco.
