Mr. Jessel

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will provide in theOfficial Report full lists of (a) all Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force hospitals and (b) all service establishments which contain in-patient hospital facilities, listing in each case the number of beds established, the number of beds occupied on any recent convenient date, the nursing establishment and the relative number of nurses currently employed.

There are no in-patient hospital facilities at other service establishments. I shall answer shortly with the statistical information required for each hospital.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many beds in service hospitals facilities are now occupied by National Health Service patients; and what are the present arrangements for funding the care of such patients.

Mr. Freeman

The average daily bed occupancy of NHS in-patients at United Kingdom service hospital facilities of the third quarter 1987 was 649, which included 121 service dependants. NHS patients are currently admitted subject to resources being available and treated without charge to the NHS. Exceptionally ex-service far east prisoners of war are treated on an extra cost basis and, at RAF hospital Ely, NHS patients are treated in 65 reserved beds under a local contract with the district health authority.
