To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) what is the latest figure for the number of staff presently employed in the press and public relations office of his Department; and what is the number planned to be employed at this point in 1988;

(2) what is the latest figure for the number of staff presently employed in the press and public relations offices of the armed forces; and what is the number planned to be employed at this point in 1988.

I refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Harlow (Mr. Hayes) on 16 November 1987, at columns446–47. No significant change in the number of staff employed by the defence public relations staffs of the Ministry of Defence is envisaged in the next year.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) what is the latest figure for the estimated spending in 1987–88 by his Department on(a) television advertising, (b) radio advertising, (c) newspaper advertising and (d) other promotional material; and what are the estimated expenditures in each area for 1988–89;

(2) what is the latest figure for the estimated spending in 1987–88 by the armed forces on (a) television advertising, (b) radio advertising, (c) newspaper advertising and (d) other promotional material; and what is the estimated expenditure in each area for 1988–89.
