HC Deb 17 December 1987 vol 124 cc656-7W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Meirionnydd Nant Conwy,Official Report, 23 November, column 36, if he will list what information he has as to the specific numbers of both nuclear warheads and launch vehicles to be withdrawn in accordance with the intermediate nuclear forces treaty.

Mr. Ian Stewart

The INF treaty provides for the withdrawal of 859 US missiles and 283 launchers; and 1,752 Soviet missiles and 845 launchers. While for the purposes of the treaty all missiles are deemed to carry nuclear warheads, in practice a proportion may be armed with conventional or chemical warheads; and some non-deployed missiles included in these figures may not be equipped with warheads. A full breakdown of the missiles and equipment to be eliminated is contained in the memorandum of understanding on data, a copy of which has been placed in the Library.
