HL Deb 13 October 1986 vol 480 cc670-1WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What response they have made to the Soviet proposal at the Geneva Disarmament Conference that "a group of expert seismologists start working out a system for prompt transmission of second-level seismic data which would serve as the basis for international seismic monitoring of a nuclear weapons test ban".

Baroness Young

At its meeting in July the conference on disarmament's ad hoc group of scientific experts, in which the UK plays an active part, agreed to conduct a large-scale experiment on the exchange of Level II seismic data. This followed discussion of the possibility of holding such an experiment at earlier meetings of the group when some other countries prevented agreement on the future role of the AHGSE. We welcome the agreement in July on the future of the group. The Soviet statement quoted in the question removed an important block to reaching that agreement.
